Internal Medicine is the specialty that provides continuing and comprehensive medical care for individuals who range in age from young adults to the elderly. The internist is essentially a general physician for adults. He or she has had special training in all of the diseases of adulthood. As such, the Internist is the physician who will initially diagnose and treat a person who has a problem. If necessary he may then refer the patient to the appropriate sub-specialist. The Internist is the physician who will perform comprehensive physical exams and is particularly interested in preventative care.
In the current medical climate of managed care, HMO's, etc., the Internist is referred to as a primary care provider or PCP.
An Internist's medical training includes four years of college, four years of medical school and then three years of post-doctoral training in inpatient and outpatient medicine.
